For far too long finding great looking, stylish bar stools eluded homeowners and even professional designers. Manufacturers until now just didn’t offer countless options. But all that has recently changed.
Perhaps the continuing popularity of kitchen islands with counter seating has finally prompted furniture manufacturers to become more creative and prolific in designing and manufacturing bar stools. Today you can find just about any style and color that you need to complete your kitchen’s décor.
Bar stools for the most part are the only pieces of furniture in a kitchen. They have the ability to complete the look and establish the overall theme of the space. Let’s face it most kitchen cabinets look very similar. The only real different is the finish and perhaps the hardware. The majority of appliances today are all stainless steel leaving only two items that can set the tone, countertop accessories and bar stools.
The quickest way to take a plain white kitchen from traditional to contemporary is to select stainless, colored or Lexan bar stools. Love the industrial look? Select bar stools that feature wood and dark patina metals.
Upholstered bar stools deliver a more traditional flair while wood depending on the style and finish can go in many directions. Choices of upholstered fabrics can be limiting. Check out how the seats are attached to the stool. You might be able to change out the fabric pretty easily.
Don’t let yourself be carried away with just another pretty seat. Make sure the stool that you buy is comfortable. No matter how great the design or the color, if it’s not a comfortable sit don’t even consider it. Take the time to test drive it before you buy.
Which brings us to backless stools. Kids don’t mind sitting on stools without back support but most adults would prefer more support. Make sure the back is cozy and doesn’t hit at an uncomfortable spot. If the stool has arms make sure they can fit easily under the counter.
My favorite type is a swivel stool. Every party or get together starts, stays and ends at the kitchen island no matter how hard you try to more your guest to another location. Swivel stools make conversation so much easier and help open up the space for more conversation from the standing roll of attendees.Stools come in two standard heights. Counter height stools are commonly 23-28 inches from the floor to the seat. They work well with 35-37 inch counter or table heights. A bar-height stool is commonly has a 29-32 inches seat height. Make sure you know which height will work best in your kitchen. If you are planning to add an upholstered seat cushion to the stool take that into consideration as well. Give your guest some legroom; allow 9-12” from the top of the seat to the bottom of the counter.
How many stools can you fit around your island? To allow for optimal space for eating, working and socializing allow 26-30” from the center of one stool to the center of the stool next to it. Stools with arms will require a little more space.
For just a few hundred dollars you can completely transform your kitchen space with new, stylish bar stools. Do it before your next party!
