The Pantone Color of the Year is Greenery, a refreshing and devitalizing shade of zesty yellow-green that’s symbolic of new beginnings.
“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” States Leatrice Eisement, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.
Each year Pantone, a standardized color matching system for identifying colors, selects a shade based on months of research covering social, economic, fashion and manufacturing trends. Some years their choice is a huge hit, like in 2012 with Tangerine Tango or a miss like Marsala in 2015. Last year they couldn’t settle on just one shade so they choose Serenity (baby blue) and Rose Quartz (light pink).
I’m thrilled with the their 2017 pick. Green has always been one of my favorite colors. Greenery is nature’s neutral making it easy to pair with many color combinations. It also makes this color easy to incorporate into existing decors for a fresh update that transcends all seasons.
Green is a happy color. The simple introduction of a bowl of Granny Smith green apples on a counter top brightens the kitchen. While an entire room painted green has a calming effect on any size room. It’s hard to say that about any other color.
Pantone sets the stage but each member of the home furnishings and building community sets forth their own tinge on the trend. Sue Wadden director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams comments, “We’ve been watching green gain momentum in the last few seasons. The Colormix 2017 S/W Color Forecast boasts several green hues.”
“All you need to do to understand the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year, Greenery, is to close your eyes and envision a warm spring day in the park. The energy and liveliness of this color brings excitement to designs looking for a way to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s a great complement to the array of wood tones typically found in home interiors from cabinets and flooring to furniture.” Explains Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends, MasterBrand Cabinets.
Even door and window manufacturer Marvin, is embracing this year’s color. “It’s no surprise to us that Pantone’s 2017 color of the year is Greenery. Homeowners are increasingly seeking a connection with nature and looking for new ways to bring the outdoors in. Larger, more expansive windows and doors are one way to do just that, and they’re in-demand because they offer unobstructed views of the outdoors, bringing in natural light, vibrant colors found in the environment and a source of fresh air – in essence, letting nature itself be the source of this refreshing green hue in a space.” States Christine Marvin, director of corporate strategy for Marvin Windows and Doors.
Weather you choose to invest in a new green sofa, paint a room or just open the curtains, you’ll find it easy and refreshing to embrace the new 2017 color of the year.
