Designing perfect work centers for a home takes skill, knowledge and quality products.
As a custom designer, you must know how to maximize every inch of space in what can be a limited area. You must understand building codes and requirements and have a working knowledge of all the appliance and cabinet manufacturers options.
All these design tools are important but the biggie is knowing how your client lives. Bill loves to cook and entertain. He is also 6’5” so height and plenty of room to move about is key to making his kitchen function for him. He likes for the party to start in his kitchen. While he cooks, he wants his guests to enjoy great wine from his 2,000 bottle wine room and spontaneous tastings.
In addition to the kitchen I also designed a scullery between the indoor gourmet kitchen and the outdoor kitchen. The scullery incorporates pantry shelves, built-in cabinets, countertop, farm sink, dishwasher and ice maker.
I recommended Sub Zero and Wolf appliances for the kitchen, scullery and outdoor kitchen. I have these appliances in my kitchen and feel confident they will meet his high standards.
As always, recommend my clients to use a combination of custom and semi-custom cabinets when doing an entire house. Spend your money in the kitchen, master bath or public spaces. Save with semi-custom in kid’s and guest baths.
Working with Jeanine DeVaney and her team we designed the entire house as if we were using custom cabinets. Then we shared the designs with the design team at MasterBrand.
MasterBrand is one of the largest cabinet manufacturers in North America. Listening to the desires of families to ensure that the cabinetry products meet their needs MasterBrand’s portfolio allows me a wide spectrum of products and price points to meet my customers’ needs.
We ended up using the same door style “Sloan” for most of the rooms but different colors and brands throughout the house. In the kitchen, we selected Decora maple cabinets with two different finishes.
For the surround cabinets, Smokey Hills (brownish stain) a custom color from MasterBrand’s Omega line. For the island cabinets, the same Decora cabinets but in Jet (black) with a Twilight glaze.
In the Scullery, Decora cabinets in Blue Lagoon another custom color from the Omega line. Laundry room and drop zone are from the Diamond Brand collection. They are also dark blue, Maritime, a standard color from Diamond. The blue is just a shade off the scullery but since you can’t see them at the same time it saved money. Turned out great.
Gym bath and guest bath are Diamond cabinets in Juniper Berry and Clover.
The only custom cabinets used in the house were for the Master bath and Powder room. The contemporary, mahogany, horizontal wood grain design required custom fabrication.
